INSPIRATION:

The appearance of traditional Turkish houses is characterised by a ground floor close to the street with a stone, adobe wall that bears the upper floor which has always had pitched roofs from all sides. Besides, the standard size of windows creates a rhythmic unity in the whole town.

(Turkish houses. (n.d.). https://www.ktb.gov.tr/EN-117798/turkish-houses.html#:~:text=The%20main%20building%20material%20in,are%20within%20seismic%20fault%20zones.)

In this point of view, the typical housing style of the country is reinterpreted in a contemporary way by creating a material composition along with the traditional cement-based poured mosaic carding technique and modernistic exposed concrete walls.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The main idea of the project is to provide unobstructed natural air circulation and daylight for the neighbours on the edge. However, this approach leads to different edge relationships for the residents of the twin house. Therefore, the floor plans of the units are designed around alternate gallery spaces that face different directions to respond to different edge conditions. This variation in the floor plans also helps to ensure privacy between the adjacent rooms. Therefore, the floor plans of the units are differentiated around the alternated gallery spaces directed to different elevations to respond to varied edge conditions. Despite having two different plan layouts for the units, a settled and monolithic building character is aimed to be achieved. In this perspective, a reinterpretation of traditional Turkish residential block typology is triggered by designing a pitched roof in composition with exposed concrete, glass and traditional cement-based poured (hand carding) mosaic garden walls.
